General Uses of Automation in Mixing

Automation is an audio system that allows you to store, retrieve, and alter parameters. Automation allows parameter changes to be recorded in real time. Movements of faders, pan pots and mute switch can be recorded into the automation to completely automate your mix.

The following items can be recorded into the automation:

  • Channel Fader operations (Level)
  • Channel ON/OFF operations (Mutes)
  • Channel Pan pots
  • Channel EQ
  • Channel Aux send faders
  • Channel Dynamic processors

This is particularly useful if you want to change the type or quality of a dynamics, reverb or effect during a mix. In order to change them, you need to assign your settings to different scenes and then change between the scenes at predetermined times. You can record fader operations, pans, and EQ all at once, in separate passes, or punch-in/out to re-record specific mix items. In addition, the timing and values of the automated item can be edited off-line, without the mix running. So, for example, if you know you want to mute the guitar at a specific time in your song, you can simply write a mute on and off as events in the automation memory for that song without having to play it through. There is room for you to store different automations for each song and you can recall and use any one of them as desired.
