Guidelines prior to Recording Instruments (1)

1. Pan the tom-toms (Drums): Typically, tom-toms pan left to right with the highest tom panned to 9:00, the middle tom panned to 12:00 and the lowest tom panned to 3:00.

2. When you copy an existing song, adjust level, pan, pitch and length until your sound as close as the original recording. Go back and forth from the original soundtrack to your recording. In the studio world we call this "A/B-ing" where you compare your mix to another by alternating playback and making adjustments.

3. Have the bass play rhythms similar to what the kick drum plays. Don't use too many different notes in the bass line and don't deviate from the rhythm of the kick drum very often. This will give your bottom a solid "punch" and provide an indication as to what chords you will play on the keyboard.

4. Use a thinner, higher frequency patch for your additional synthesizer track. Play only one or two notes at a time using notes from the chords and bass and including a few extra notes in-between.
