Scale & Mode

Scale

- A group of musical notes collected in ascending and descending order, that provides material for or is used to conveniently represent part or all of a musical work including melody and or harmony

- Scales are ordered in pitch or pitch class, with their ordering providing a measure of musical distance

- The distance between two successive notes in a scale is called a 'scale step' (A scale is an ordered series of intervals, which along with the key or tonic, defines the pitches)

Mode

- is usually used in the sense of "scale" applied only to the specific "diatonic scales"

- "Modality" refers to the pitch relationships found in music using modes and contrasted with later tonality

- "Tonality" is a system of music in which specific hierarchical pitch relationships are based on a key "center" or tonic
