Harmonic Content
Harmonic content: - Presence of harmonics
Harmonic structure: - Which harmonics (odd / even) are present in the tonality
Defines the Families: 1. String: Fundamental + both odd & even (dominant even) 2. Brass (closed pipe): Fundamental + odd only 3. Wind (open pipe): Fundamental + All harmonics (odd & even) 4. Reed: Fundamental + All harmonics (dominant odd) 5. Human voice: Fundamental + All harmonics
Harmonic Wave train (a.k.a “Frequency Response”): - A plot of the amplitude of the harmonics present ==> Describe the instrument's individual “Personality” within the family
Masking (2 types):
1) Loudness - If sound #1 is louder than sound #2 then sound #1 masks the sound #2
2) Harmonic Masking - The louder harmonics cover the weaker ones - Generally, Harmonic Masking reduces tonal density
*From the above picture (Harmonic structure of Guitar 1 & Guitar 2) ex1) Guitar 1 mix with Guitar 2 —> Low frequencies of Guitar 1 mask those of Guitar 2, High frequencies of Guitar 2 mask those of Guitar 1 ex2) Guitar 1 mix with Guitar 2 —> ‘9’ in the harmonic structure will be disappeared (because they compete each other)
