Phase

Phase (Ø):

- A plot of amplitude change over time

Ø Relationships:

- The resulting amplitude changes in wave combinations when a time relationship exists

*In phase relationship:

- We can cancel other sounds

There are 2 types of phase relationships:

1) Complete phase relationships

2) Partial phase relationships

1. Complete phase relationships:

- 0° and 180° phase relationships (there are only 2 complete phase relationships)

- There are the only relationships which can result in 'doubling' or 'total cancellation'

Common Terminology:

e.g. 0° = In phase

       150° = Out of phase

* 'In Phase' = Additive, Reinforcement (Increase in amplitude)

* 'Out of Phase' = Subtractive, Cancellation (Decrease in amplitude)

0° Phase relationship:

- In phase

- Totally additive

0° Phase relationship (In phase, doubling)
