Close-field Miking

1) No Environment (Integration) ==> Haas effect

- In the close field, subtle change to the tone can be achieved by slight variations of Mic distance

- All sounds we hear is a combination of direct & reverb sounds (In close field, direct sound is much predominate than reverb)

- Distance minimize ‘emotional effect’ in vocal recording

*Sing ‘loudest’ as you can do for emotional appeal to Microphone in studio (Screaming is usually 3 dB below maximum capacity of Mic)

2) Impact over tone

- Tonality develops with distance

- Pick-up emphasize attack over sustain

- Sharp, clear, bright in your face but thin sound

3) The Mic will focus on a component part of the instrument’s overall tonality

- Unnatural tonality

- Which part of instrument you focus on is important (e.g. kick drum, grand piano miking)
