The "Black Art" of Mastering

The mastering process is the final step in the process of getting your music to a delivery format (CD, cassette tape, etc.). It's at this point you have your last chance to make changes to your music. The problem is that, you have everything mixed together. This makes it impossible to make track changes (like removing that guitar part in the second verse). However, there are things that can be done to your mix to make it sound better without having to go back to remix. Formants can be used to bring out a specific instrument within a mix. The approach is to find a frequency that helps to define the instrument you want to affect, without unduly affecting other instruments within the mix. This article will get you started listening for formants and using them to bring out certain elements within a mix.

 

 

1) Using the drum tracks on "Your Song", find the formants of the hihat and snare.

In the space provided, enter the frequencies you found and a description of what they did for that component of the drum set.

2) EQ your TWO tracks using the formants you found and the "generic" frequencies commonly used and compare the two in terms of the sonic differences.
