Glossary 2

Legato Mode

When you play a note before releasing the previous note, the ADSR is does not activate.

Portamento

When you play notes legato, the synthesizer "glides" through all frequencies before setting on the next note. Portamento only really works well on Monophonic sounds.

Polyphony

How many notes you can play at the same time. (e.g. 1 note polyphony is called 'Monophonic'.)

Cent

"Cent detune". There are 100 cents per half-step. This is used to detune one oscillator from the other. Having two oscillators playing slightly out of tune makes a natural "chorus" effect.

Res.

Resonance: This sends the output of the filter back in to the filter. This result is a steep peaking eq that makes the sound "wet" like it were bubbling through water. Resonance make a sound  patch "Funky".

Filter Envelope

Opens and closes the filter automatically every time a note is retriggered.

Amp Envelope

Amplitude Envelope. Otherwise known as acoustic envelope or ADSR.

Velocity

All knobs are set to the "12:00" detent position. This means that the synth will not respond to velocity information. Press the key hard or soft, it will sound the same.

Sound Designer

A "Sound designer" is a person who does just that, designs sounds. A sound designer might be  creating special effects for a space movie, a car commercial or creating a keyboard patch for use on a music production. The tools of the sound designer consist of: audio recorders and editors, synthesizers, samplers and libraries of stock sounds.
