The table below shows the allowable hearing time for the human ears depending on the sound pressure level. According to the table below, there is no problem for a person to listen to a sound of 85 dB for up to 16 hours, but the allowable hearing time for a sound of 100 dB is less than 2 hours.

* TableAllowable hearing time depending on sound pressure level (dB)

Sound Pressure Level (dB) 85 90 95 100 105 110 115 120

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of United States Department of Labor indicates that if you need to raise your voice to speak to someone 3 feet (=1 meter) away, noise levels might be over 85 dB. OSHA also points out that noise may be a problem in your workplace if you:

  • hear ringing or humming in your ears when you leave work
  • have to shout to be heard by a coworker an arm's length away
  • experience temporary hearing loss when leaving work.
