Sampling

Sampling

Short digital audio file (note or phrase) playback via MIDI control

1. Melodic: Creates a new MIDI instrument from a single sample

2. Transposition: Several octaves of electronic pitch transposition on keyboard

3. Polyphony: Ability to play chords

Multi-sampling

Multiple samples of one instrument mapped to corresponding key ranges

1. Limiting the range of transposition gives better quality

2. Key zone: Playback range of one sample

3. Root key: MIDI note that plays sample’s natural pitch

▲ Assign 'Root key'

*The more distance from the root key, the more sound weird ( Electronically transposed)

*Overtone content is different depend on key

*Cut samples in Zero-crossing area

('Zero-crossing area': the area that no sound signal exist)

If you cut No zero-crossing line such as,

then you would get a 'click sound (noise)'

Kits

Assorted samples from different instruments

Sources mapped to individual keys

1. Use ‘Single-key’ key zones

2. Allow spontaneous rhythmic performance

3. Root key = Single-key range (key zone)

Groove construction

Allows performance of groove variations

1. Uses multiple copies of a groove, with different start time

2. Uses single-key zone (Root key = single-key range)
