Audio to MIDI Triggering of Drum (1)

Converting Audio to MIDI requires a device that can convert CV (Control Voltage) to MIDI and do this conversion extremely fast (Typically under 7 ms). Drum Replacement employs Drum Triggering using Acoustic Drums to trigger Sampled Drums.

Drum Replacement

This is when you do not want to use the existing drums. The typical reason is that the unacceptable your mixing goals. This drum triggering will replace the original drums. (You no longer want to use the original drums.)

Drum Enhancement or Layering

This is when you do want to use the existing Drum sounds but layer them with samples. In thiscase, the drum sounds on tape are ok but could be improved, thickened, or otherwise enhanced by combining a few samples with the originals in the mix. This version of Drum triggering enhances the existing Drums sounds.

Typical Applications

Kick and Snare Drum where the drummer plays a relatively simple. Solid beat or Groove that is not excessively syncopated, dynamic or complex.

Remember Drum Replacement (or Enhancement) only improves the Sound Not the Performance. A sloppy, poorly played drum part with great sounds is still bad drumming. Don't confuse performance with sounds. They are separate issues. A drummer could play the best groove possible on poorly tuned, poorly Mic'd and poorly recorded drums but their performance would still be great and might be a likely candidate for triggering.
