Artificial Reverb

1. Reverb(Echo) chamber

- Totally isolated room

- Hard, reflective, non-parallel surfaces

- Signal is sent to speaker in chamber

- Microphone (not facing speakers) picks up reflected sound and sends it back to control room to be mixed with the direct (dry) sound

▲ Reverb(Echo) Chamber

A typical reverb chamber is made out of brick, stone, concrete or some other dense material. The walls are usually covered with several coats of plaster. This results in a highly effective surface which allows for the midrange frequencies to decay for several seconds.

2. Spring Reverb

- An electro-mechanical device

- Contact speaker puts sound into the spring

- Contact microphone picks up sound every time it passes the microphone

*AKG BX-25E (famous spring reverb)

▲ Spring Reverb

The spring reverb is an electromechanical device very much like the plate reverb. The signal to be reverberated is fed to a transducer at the end of a long suspended metal coil spring. The transducer causes the spring to vibrate, and of course it is in the nature of springs to be 'springy', so the signal reflects from the other end of the spring and generally bounces around.

3. Plate reverb

An electro-mechanical device

- Very few chamber

- 6' x 4' x 1/64" size steel plate

*EMT 140, EMT 140TS (Famous plate reverb)

▲ Plate Reverb

Plate reverbs were one of the first types of artificial reverbs used in recording. They used a steel plate under tension supplied by springs at the corners where the plate was attached to an outer shell. The plate gets vibrated in accordance with a signal from a transducer and the vibration is sensed elsewhere on the plate with a contact microphone of one type or another.

4. Digital Reverb

*Programs that simulate:

- Spring reverb

- Plate reverb

- Rooms

- Chambers

- Halls

- Wild spaces

*You can modify:

i) RT (Reverb Time)

ii) Pre-delay

iii) EQ (Dark = absorbent, Bright = very reflective)

▲ Lexicon 480L digital reverb

Digital reverb is an artificial reverb generated by digital algorithms as opposed to electromechanical means, such as plate or spring or acoustic means, such as creating an echo chamber. Digital reverbs allow users to create programs that emulate natural or unnatural spaces.
