The Phone Voice Sound

Way, way back in time, the telephone company needed to know the minimum number of frequencies (bandwidth) needed for speech intelligibility over telephone lines. The smaller the bandwidth, the less energy would be needed to transmit the audio, among other considerations. So the telephone company did a lot of research to find out just what frequencies in the human voice spectrum were most important for speech intelligibility and which were not. They then developed an equalization curve and circuitry to shape the human voice for the most efficient use of the limited bandwidth of the phone system at the time. Hence the 'phone' sound. To us in the audio world, this sound can be produced using a bandpass filter, which allows only the mids to pass and then severely compressing the resulting signal.

Here are the steps to producing the phone sound on the vocal:

1) Select the vocal channel

2) Cut the low and high end

3) Boost the mid range

4) Insert a compressor (post EQ) and compress the signal to a narrow dynamic range

Once you have figured out the phone sound settings, you're going to have to automate the vocal track so that you can go in and out of the effect when you want to. You do this by updating your vocal track's EQ and fader information at just the places you want the sound to change.
