Dynamic Ranges of Audio Media

The overall dynamic range of music is potentially greater than 120 dB. While digital consoles that process high-resolution digital audio (192 kHz sampling at 24-bit resolution) can process audio with this much dynamic range, there are few reproduction electronics that can match thatrange (Figure 1). As a result, when program material of wide dynamic range is reproduced through any of today's media, some information will necessarily get lost. To prevent this problem, the wide dynamic range of audio needs to be reduced to an amount appropriate both for the medium through which it is being reproduced, and for comfortable listening for the average person. Devices used to adjust the dynamic range of a sound are called dynamic range processors.
