Dither

 

Whenever a high-resolution is reduced to a low resolution, a quantization error will be introduced to the signal —> In this case, dither should be employed. (∵ truncated (a simple dropping lower level value bits when converting to low level) bits may produce noise)

 

Dither —> Noise added to a signal before quantizing in order to:

1) Increase dynamic range

2) Disconnect signal from distortion (trades added noise for less distortion)

 

 

*Dither —> 

- Trade off noise for distortion

- Noise added to a signal before quantizing, so that errors are randomized

- Quantization error is correlated to the signal 

- Dither de-correlates that distortion

- Bonus: We hear beneath the noise floor

- We can reconstruct sound from beneath a noise floor (eg. Background noise)
