Historic Synthesizer: Yamaha DX7 (2)

1. FM Digital Tone Generation

Let's look at the principle and structure of the DX7's FM Digital Tone Generation System. We will also look at the process of making sounds by using the algorithms adopted to DX7.

Meaning of FM

FM refers to Frequency ModulationFM radio broadcasts use the same principle. The FM signal consists of a carrier and a modulator. In FM radio broadcasts, the carrier is a very high frequency, and the modulator is a music signal that is broadcast. Carrier transfers the modulator signal through the air to the receiving antenna of the home radio.

Yamaha's FM Digital Tone Generation System is almost same as the FM broadcasting principle as above. The only difference is that the carrier in DX7 is an audible signal and the frequency of the carrier may be almost the same as that of the modulator.
