Composing, Producing and Mixing

 

 

When you are programming beats or figuring out melodic riffs on a keyboard, you are 'Composing' the music. In most of today's music, music composing is done in the MIDI realm.

 

When you are selecting the sounds to use and creating the form (arranging) of the song, you are 'Producing' the music. Producers also coach the performers to perform their best. Producers often bridge the gap between MIDI and the final mix.

 

When you E.Q., compress, add reverb, etc, you are 'Mixing' the music. Mixing is executed in the audio realm.

 

Rarely will you find a person who can excel at all three.
