The Stereo Flange Effect

The stereo flange effect produces a pleasant "swirling" sound that can effectively thicken and add warmth to the sound of an instrument. It is produced by varying the amount of delay time between two identical signals. This effect is a widely used audio processing technique, commonly applied to guitars, keyboards, vocals, and synthesizers to add a unique spatial character, making the sound feel richer and more immersive.

The effect was first developed using reel-to-reel tape machines, where engineers ran two synchronized tapes and manually pressed on the flange (rim) of one reel to slightly slow it down, creating subtle time delays between the signals—hence the name "flanging".

At its core, the flanging effect is created by mixing two identical audio signals together: One of which is delayed by a small and continuously varying amount of time, typically between 0.1 to 10 milliseconds. This slight delay creates phase cancellations and reinforcements at specific frequencies, producing the characteristic sweeping comb filter effect that flaging is known for. As the delay time oscillates, these canncellations and reinforcements shift up and down the frequency spectrum, creating the impression of a moving, swirling texture.

When applied in stereo, the flange effect becomes even more spatially engaging. By applying different delay modulations to the left and right channelsoften using an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) with phase-offset modulationa wide stereo image can be achieved. This stereo flanging introduces a dynamic interplay between the two channels, enhancing the perception of movement and depth. This makes the effect particularly effective in creating atmospheric or psychedelic sounds.
