Digital Delay

Types of Delays

1. Straight Delay

The amount of time between the source sound and the delayed sound is always the same

2. Modulated Delay

The amount of time between the source sound and the delayed sound is changing (modulating) overtime. The delay time is being modulated by a Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO). Types of modulated delays are Tremolo, Chorus, Phasing, Flanging and Double Tracking (ADT) and Doppler shift simulations.

Special Effects that use Delay

1. Flanging

A modulated delay with the LFO set between 0.10 ~ 10.0 μs and feedback

2. Chorusing

A modulated delay with the LFO set between 10 ~ 20 μs without feedback

3. Timed Delay

A time-based effect whose delay is derived from the tempo of the song. To do this, you need to know the tempo of Beats Per Minute (BPM) of the song

Basic Delay Parameters

1. Delay Time

The expression of the amount of time between the source (original signal) and each repeated signal. It is usually measured in milliseconds (1000 ms = 1 second).

2. Feedback/Regeneration

This is the amount of output signal that is sent back into the input of the delay device. The amount of feedback determines the number of repeats. This parameter is measured in percent of signal being fed back (%).

3. LFO Rate (Speed, Frequency)

This is the rate at which the Delay time will go from one time to another. This parameter is frequently referred to the Modulation Rate or Mod Frequency or Mod Speed. The LFO is usually (but not always) a sine wave.

4. Modulation Width

This parameter determines the maximum and minimum delay times that LFO will operate between.

5. Modulation Depth

This parameter sets the amount of modulated signal that is sent back into the source. It will determine how the two signals add and subtract. The greater the depth, the more the two signals will add and subtract, the greater will be the effect.

Multiple Delays

Most current delay programs are stereo algorithms. They can be set and operated independently of each other. For example, the right side can be set for a half note delay while the left side can be set for a quarter note delay. In this case, the delay would move/repeat right to left to right to left to right, etc.

Timed Delays

In pop music, delay times are matched to and derived from the BPM (tempo) when using shortto long delays. To do sync or BPM timed delay effects, you must know the tempo of the material.

How To Calculate the BPM of a Song (when it is not indicated)

1. Count the number of measures (bars) in 15 seconds, then

2. Multiply that number by 4. This will give you the number of beat in 15 seconds. Now,

3. Multiply this number by 4 again to get the BPM (Beats Per Minute).
