Microphone Frequency Response

Frequency Response:

- A plot of the relative amplitude of all frequency within the bandwidth

*Reference = Flat Frequency Response

Flatter the device, the more accuracy:

==> To look for accuracy, check the frequency response of the microphone

*Large diaphragm microphone —> has more flat frequency response

ex) Vocal recording

Mouth - Mic Distance:

1) Less than 1 inch => Full response

2) More than 2 inches => Bass elimination

SPL (Sound Pressure Level) handling:

Self-limiting => Dynamic Mics do this “best”

In all microphones, the diaphragm has mechanical limits of motion. If the input SPL exceeds this limit, then:

a) Clipping will occur

b) The output will have a reduced P/A ratio (= pascals (Pa, sound pressure measurement))

==> this makes compressed sound
