Mixing with Compression Only

1) Remove all processing from the entire tracks of your song.

Bypass any compression on all the channels.

2) Set up an unprocessed rough mix.

Using only volume and pan controls set up a mix using all of the song's tracks.

3) Listen for dynamic problem areas.

  • Listen to all of the tracks in the mix and determine which ones could use compression to lessen their dynamic range. Do any of the tracks get lost in certain sections of the song? Which ones and in which sections?
  • Is any of the instrument's tone or presence compromised? Which tracks lose tone or presence when placed within the mix?

4) Apply compression to the tracks you feel need it.

Be careful not to overuse compression. Try to apply it only to the tracks that really need it - avoid using compression on every track just because you can.
