Tips for Reverb EQ

Use the EQ to change the timbral quality of your reverb, ensuring it complements the mix without overpowering or muddying it. Consider the following suggestions:

  • To add brilliance to the overall mix, gently boost the high frequencies (around 10 kHz). This works particulary well for vocal reverb or instruments like acoustic guitar and cymbals.
  • Reverberation can create masking effects, where certain frequencies overlap and muddy the mix. To eliminate some of the clutter created by the reverberation, attenuate the high-mid frequencies (around 2 kHz). This is especially useful when the reverb interferes with the intelligibility of vocals.
  • If the reverb is too boomy, attenuate the low frequencies (around 80 Hz). This is often needed for drum or bass-heavy tracks, where low-end buildup can overwhelm the mix. Consider using a high-pass filter to remove unnecessary low frequencies entirely.

Play the session as many times as you need, until you get a good reverb sound.
