Learning Signal Flow of Post Production Studio

To better understand the connections in your post production studio, you should group them by type. There are three basic layers in a standard post production studio system: Video, Audio, and Sync. Furthermore, the sync layer can be subdivided into three more layers: Time Base (clock) - same as speed, Address (time code) - same as location, and Transport.

One way to study signal flow is to focus on two pieces of equipment first. Analyze the outputs of any source device and find where the respective cables are connected (i.e. the destination device). For example, let's say you want to learn the audio signal flow. You might want to start with the mixer first, since it's used to monitor the signals from all the other audio devices in the studio. Learn the connections between the mixer and each device connected to it, one at a time. Then, once you have learned all the audio connections, go on to another layer of the signal flow (e.g. sync). Study the relationship of two machines that are part of this layer. Then, go on to two other machines until you have covered all possible connections, and so on.
