Dynamic Range Controllers (1)

Dynamic Range Controllers:

1. Compressor

2. Limiter

*Threshold

1. A level setting

2. Above it, the compressor works begin

Compressor => lower threshold setting

Limiter => very high threshold setting

*Key parameters of dynamic range controllers:

Ratio

1. Comparison of input level to output level after signal has risen above threshold

2. Compressor ratio -->  1.1:1 to 10:1

3. Limiter ratio -->  20:1 to ( ∞:1) ==> true ceiling

Attack

The time in µs (micro second: 1/million of a second) to ms (milli second = 1/1000 sec) for compression to begin (once signal goes over threshold)

Release

1. Time (in ms to sec) that it takes for the unit to return to unity gain (1:1) once signal falls below threshold

2. If you set ‘release time’ really short, sounds would like weird (sneaking sounds)

3. Too fast a release time cause “pumping” or “breathing” sounds
