Review: Compression Parameters

Threshold

Signal level at which the compressor's gain reduction "kicks in".

Ratio

Determines the amount of gain reduction for signals above the threshold. It can be thought of as the difference between input and output. It is actually the ratio of amount of input signal change above threshold that will cause a 1 dB change in output level. Common ratios are 2:1, 6:1, and 10:1. After this ratio the compressor acts like a limiter, keeping signal from going much above the set threshold level regardless of input change.

Attack

This adjustment controls the time it takes the compressor to "kick in" after a signal level goes above threshold. It will affect the attack energy of a sound. Typical times are in the micro- to milli- seconds range.

Release

This adjustment controls the time it takes the compressor to "kick out" after a signal level falls back below threshold. It will affect the release energy of a sound. Typical times are in the milli-seconds range.

Output Gain (Gain Makeup)

This is a straight gain stage downstream of the gain reduction section of the compressor (post compression gain makeup). It is used add level to compensate for the loss of overall signal gaindue to the compression stage.
