Compressor: Bass

*Compression Setting:
Compression Ratio: 4:1

Attack Time: medium

Release Time: medium to fast

Threshold level: set to compress loudest peaks 2 - 4 dB

- Engineers frequently use compression to limit a bass's dynamic range, as a bass can eat up a great deal more of your mix headroom than signals that have less low frequency energy.

- Compression is also useful for smoothing out a dynamically uneven performance, or to make the bass feel like it's slamming into a brick wall.

- For a natural sound, use threshold settings that compress the loudest point 2 - 4 dB. For "in your face" results, use settings that produce 6 - 8 dB (or more) of compression.

- If you're dealing with a synth bass that has great dynamic swings, try using less sensitive threshold settings and ratio of 8:1 or more. *Caution: Watch out for distortion that can be introduced by overly quick release times.
