Dynamic Processor (1)

The dynamic processor family:

1. Limiter

2. Compressor

3. Expander

4. Gates

5. Compander (combination of 'compressor' and 'expander')

Limiter:

- A signal processor that decreases dynamic range by restricting the amplitude of high level signals

- “If you try to get really loud, I won’t let you do”

Compressor:

- A signal processor that decreases dynamic range by reducing the amplitude of high level signals

- “If you get a lot louder, I’ll let you get a little louder”

[side trip]

Italian words: 'piano' —> soft, 'forte' —> loud

Dynamic Range:

- In music, the span between the 'softest' and 'loudest' sound produced

- In audio gear, the span between 'noise' and 'distortion'

Other ways to affect dynamic:

1. Alter musician’s dynamics

2. Microphone technic (e.g. vocalist)

softer voice —> distant to mic

louder voice —> close to mic

3. Gain riding with faders

4. Overload Amps (pin the needles)

5. Analog tapes
