Compressor: Drums & Percussion

*Compression Setting:
Compression Ratio: 4:1 to 8:1

Attack Time: fast

Release Time: medium to fast

Threshold level: set to compress loudest peaks 4 - 6 dB

- Conceptual approaches to mixing drums vary greatly, but regardless of whether you're mixing huge rock drums or the small, intense elements of a hip-hop kit, compressing the sound will yield more "record-like" results.

- Compression also allows you to place sounds at a lower level in the mix while retaining their impact.

- If you don't have enough compressors available to process each individual drum, submix the drums via the console groups to a stereo compression setup (two matched mono units or a single stereo device).

- If possible, you should include the drum's associated effects in the mix sent to the compressor.

- If you're using a drum machine, it's quite possible that its internal sounds are already compressed. If that's the case, you'll most likely not have to compress each individual drum to control its dynamic range. Rather, you can process the entire kit to add the desired sonic texture.
