Compressor: Overall Mix

*Compression Setting:
Compression Ratio: 2:1 to 4:1

Attack Time: medium to fast

Release Time: medium to fast

Threshold: set to compress loudest peaks 3 - 4 dB

- If you process the entire stereo mix through either a stereo compressor or two matched mono units, you can bring out more low end and "tighten up" the overall sound.

- This technique is also commonly used to get that "radio" sound.

- Don't use too much compression, however, or you'll end up with a mix that sounds small and smeared.

- Also, be aware that if the mix contains one very dynamic uncompressed element, such as a low tom hit or an electric bass, it can affect the way the compressor works on the entire mix, and can cause all of the tracks to ride up and down in level too dramatically.

- For best results, use overall mix compression as the icing on a well made cake.
