Components of synthesizer:

1. Hardware (e.g. keyboard, sound module, ..)

2. Synthesis Engine (e.g. oscillator, sound chip, ..)

3. Controller (e.g. pitch wheel, modulation wheel, ..)

4. Storage Device (e.g. usb, memory card, ..)

5. Additional Sequencer (e.g. built-in sequencer (workstation))

 

 

2. Synthesis Engine

The core of the synthesizer is the sound generator. In the past, the sound generator was an analog oscillotor, but gradually it was replaced by a digital oscilloter, and synthesis by a microchip became mainstream.

 

As the Oscillator is replaced by digital devices, the microprocessor replaces the role of the oscillator, and the microprocessor is called the sound chip.

 

This sound chip is a custom IC specially designed to generate sound, and is designed to perform better for special actions than when using a general IC. Since custom IC is usually used only for a specific company or product, the sound chip is often different for each model as well as using different chips for each manufacturer.

 

The reason why it is not easy to compare the sound IC based on the processing speed like the CPU of a general computer is because the operating principle is different for each company. In the end, the comparison of sound chip (sound IC) should be comprehensive in terms of sound evaluation and quality and processing ability in various applications.

 

The CPU to control the sound IC acts as a core brain in the synthesizer by generating sound and calculating the input/output devices. CPUs have various models depending on their performance and purpose, but NEC and Toshiba CPUs are usually used for Japanese synthesizer products, and Motorola CPUs are widely used for synthesizers made in the US and Europe.
